    Medal awarded to W. T. G. Morton for his work with ether.


    W. T. G. Morton and Charles T. Jackson were recognized in 1850 by the National Institute of France as co-discoverers of the anaesthetic properties and application of ether. The Montyon Prize was a gold medal and cash, or the recipient could decline the medal and include its value in the cash award. Morton used the prize money to have a gold collar made for the award. The collar is solid with engraved wreaths on both sides, and framed with twisted gold rope, which also forms a suspension loop.
